Trauma Center level 1
The clinic of trauma and reconstructive surgery at the Dresden university hospital has an international reputation for treating acute and chronic injuries to the foot and ankle.

Reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle
Complex reconstructions are performed after malunited fractures, ligamentous instabilities, soft tissue injuries and tendon dysfunction. Severe neuropathic deformities and chronic osteomyelitis are treated surgically.
UWC 2Preoperative planning includes high-quality, multiplanar computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans including 3D analysis, computer simulation and pedography.

Surgery is performed in high-tech, state-of-the-art laminar flow operating rooms equipped with high-resolution image intensifiers, a variety of arthroscopes, endoscopes, a Zeiss operation microscope and ultrasound. Reorientating measures after malunited fractures and dislocations of the ankle, calcaneus, talus and midfoot aim at regaining foot function and joint preservation.

Spine surgery
The complete spectrum of anterior and posterior stabilization techniques is performed for traumatic cervical, thoracic, thoraco-lumbar and lumbar spine lesions (incl. posterior or thoracoscopic anterior decompression). All minimal invasive (lumbar spine) or thoracoscopic (thoracic and thoraco-lumbar spine) anterior fusion techniques are performed regularly, most notably percutaneous posterior instrumentations of thoraco-lumbar spine fractures. Reconstruction of posttraumatic malalignment of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine is performed routinely as well.

Shoulder, elbow and forearm surgeryUWC
Acute and chronic instability of the glenohumeral, acromioclavicular and sternoclavicular joints is treated by open, minimally invasive and arthroscopic procedures. Special attention is paid to posttraumatic impingement and malunion of the proximal humerus. Upper arm, elbow and lower arm fractures are treated according the AO-Principals and fixed in communited or osteoporotic fractures with interlocking plates or nails. As with other reconstructive procedures, preoperative planning includes high-resolution ultrasound, CT and MRI.

Pelvic, hip, knee and lower extremity
Complex pelvic fractures including acetabular fractures and fracture dislocation are anatomically reconstructed according preoperative CT-scanning and fixed according updated AO-Principals. Axial malalignment at the lower extremity and around the knee is corrected with intra- and extramedullary osteosynthesis after reorientating osteotomy. Reconstructive knee surgery includes open and arthroscopic procedures for chronic ligamentous instability and osteochondral defects including osteochondral autografts (OATS) and autologuous chondrocyte transplantation.

Hand surgery
UWC HelicopterTrauma of the wrist and hand as well as bony malformations, soft tissue problems (like defects, infections, contractures, impingements) and tendon dysfunction are treated according to high standards. Nerve decompression for carpal tunnel syndrome is done endoscopically on an outpatient basis.

For postoperative rehabilitation our department cooperates with several facilities specializing in orthopedic rehabilitation in the vicinity of Dresden. All of them are well equipped and are situated in beautiful surroundings in traditional resorts.

Research
Basic research activities focus on modification of metallic implants and hydroxyapatite-based bone substitutes with extracellular matrix components to enhance bone healing and minimize adverse reactions. The ORL University Clinic is one of the leading centres worldwide in basic and clinical research of ear and skull base.

Otology

Results from our R&D activities, such as innovative prostheses and new approaches to middle-ear reconstruction, have been introduced directly into surgical procedures for patients suffering from chronic middle-ear diseases such as cholesteatoma, tympanic membrane perforation or otosclerosis. Innovative diagnostic techniques, such as laser-Doppler-vibrometry or the dynamic probe, which was invented in our laboratory, are successfully used in diagnosis. Our vast experience in middle-ear surgery, founded on knowledge of middle-ear function gained in our basic research, is attracting an increasing number of patients from all over the country.

Cochlea Implant / Implantable hearing aids

Affiliated to our department is the saxonian cochlea-implant-center (SCIC), founded in 1995. Up to now, more than 500 patients have been provided with cochlea implants successfully. The core of the concept is the integration of preoperative (pediatric) audiological diagnostics and surgical treatment, as well as the language and speech development therapy and rehabilitation, realized by a competent team of physicians and therapists.

Tumor surgery

All modern treatments of tumor diseases in the head-and-neck region are successfully established at the ORL University Clinic. They include resection of tumors in the pharynx/larynx region with laser and ultrasonic devices, and reconstruction with microvascular free flaps. Non-invasive therapy, using radio- and chemotherapy, has been established in cooperation with our radiological and chemotherapeutical department.

Laryngology / Tracheal surgeryHNO 2

The ORL University Clinic Dresden also houses an important phoniatric department, which employs ll modern technologies relating to voice and larynx function. Modern laser surgery for diseases of the larynx and surgery for tracheal problems such as tracheal stenosis with endothesis or anastomosis surgery are well developed in our surgical department.

Department for Radiotherapy and Radiation Oncology / OncoRay
Proton beam therapy

www.uniklinikum-dresden.de/strahlen+onkologie

Direktor: Prof. Dr. med. Mechthild Krause / Prof. Dr. med. Esther TroostProfs Troost + Krause

Radiation treatment with protons is suitable for distinct tumors and treatment sites. In general, proton beam therapy is offered to patients, who are treated with curative intent. Whether treatment with protons is an option for you will be decided by the treating radiation oncologist.

Radiation oncology is besides surgery and chemotherapy one of the three pillars of the curative or palliative (symptom reduction) treatment options in oncology. Proton beam therapy is a highly precise radiation treatment technique, which has evolved rapidly during the last years and is in general applied with curative intention. Less harmful irradiation techniques and new methods and combinations of different treatment options have increased the chances of cure for patients diagnosed with cancer.

In order to translate novel findings in cancer research into routine patient care in a timely manner, we cooperate with different partner institutions, e.g., with OncoRay – Nationales Zentrum für medizinische Strahlenforschung in der Onkologie. With funding from the national government, the Free State of Saxony and other institutions, scientists can develop innovative forms of treatment against cancer and offer those to patients, some in the context of clinical studies.

For additional primary tumor sites, the effectiveness of proton beam therapy is investigated within clinical studies:

  • Primary brain tumors
  • Prostate tumors
  • Tumors in pre-irradiated regions with an indication for high-dose re-irradiation
  • Sarcoma (soft tisse sarcoma)
  • Tumors of the esophagus
  • Inoperable or irresectable lung tumors
  • Inoperable primary liver tumors
  • Tumors of the pancreas
  • Other indications, in case a high dose irradiation is indicated, but the dose cannot be delivered with conventional photon-based radiotherapy

Primary tumors eligible for proton beam therapy:

  • Tumors of the soft tissues or bones: chordomas, chondrosarcomas
  • Many pediatric tumors, in particular brain or craniospinal axis
  • Tumors of the salivary glands, in particular adenoidcystic carcinomas
  • Tumors in proximity of radiation sensitive normal tissues, e.g., base of skull or spinal cord
  • Tumor of the eyes
