Endocrinology, diabetology and metabolism
Patients with problems of the endocrine system (diseases of the thyroid
gland, parathyroid glands, the pituitary gland, the adrenal glands,
insulinoma), with diabetes (type 1 and 2) or pathologies in lipid
metabolism (hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, Lipoprotein (a) )
are examined and treated as out patients.
Usually the patients are
referred to the university hospital by another physician e.g. by the
primary care doctor. A specialist clinic takes care of diabetics on
insulin pumps. There are possibilities to treat pregnant diabetic women
as well as patients with the diabetic foot syndrome.
One of the two
wards is specialized on the treatment of the diabetic foot syndrome and
on the treatment of patients on insulin pumps. The other ward primarily
takes care of establishing therapy plans in particular for insulin for
patients with newly diagnosed diabetes and for patients with pathologies
in lipid metabolism that are difficult to handle. In addition patients
with endocrinopathies are examined with special tests and treatment is
established. Exams necessary prior to surgery are done for example in
patients with tumors of the pituitary gland, tumors of the parathyroid,
the pancreas or the adrenals. In this area there is also the treatment
possibility of the so called lipidapheresis. An indication is a
difficult to manage lipometabolic disorder that cannot be managed with
diet and medication adequately. This is in particular the case if a
coronary heart disease coexists.
