Research
- The aim of our research projects includes the clinical evaluation of new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. An innovative combined PET/MRI system in the PET center of the Institute of Radiophamaceutical Cancer Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf and a PET/CT scanner offer a modern equipment.
- Clinical trials are performed in close cooperation with departments and institutes of the Universtity Hospital and the Medical Faculty Carl Gustav Carus as well as other external partners.
- In our Radiobiology team physicians, biologists, chemists and physicists investigate the radiobiological aspects of unsealed radioisotopes that are applied to cell cultures.
- We are also researching the field of image quality and data quantification to contribute to the improvement of the validity of diagnostic results and the individual dosimetry for radionuclide therapies.
- The further development of labelling techniques for radiopharmaceuticals aims at new therapeutic approaches.
Current Emphases
- Evaluation of the clinical significance of PET/MRI studies for diagnosis and follow-up in oncologic diseases (e.g. head-neck tumors, skeletal metastases, liver metastases, lymphomas)
- Preparatory work for combined internal and external radiation therapy (CIERT) within a network in the field of radiation research (DKTK, NCT)
- Modification of the radionuclide uptake in cells
- Further analyses of the radiotoxic effects of unsealed radioisotopes on intracellular targets (DFG grant)
- Influence and correction of patient motion during the scan (4D PET/CT)
- Dosimetry: Individual 3D dosimetrie for patients having radionuclide therapy , on cellular and subcellular level using Monte Carlo simulation with GEANT4

Cooperation
Our Klinik und Poliklinik für Nuklearmedizin collaborates with partners in the University Hospital and the Medical Faculty, especially with the Dresden Center for Radiation Research in Oncology (OncoRay).
Our traditional relationship with the Institute of Radiopharmaceutical Cancer Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf continues within the DKTK and the NCT Heidelberg.
We enjoy a close cooperation with companies in Saxony: ROTOP Pharmaka GmbH and ABX GmbH.
Currently and previously some of our projects are supported by commercial companies (e.g. Pfizer, Generic Assay, Philips), the European Union (BioCare project) or by grants (Carreras Leukämie Stiftung).
