Welcome to the department of otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery
At the TUD university hospital ORL-HNS clinic and outpatient clinic, we offer the entire spectrum in diagnostics and treatment of singular and complex diseases in this field. Directed by Prof. Dr. med. habil. Dr. h.c. Thomas Zahnert, head of the clinic since 2004, a team of experts consisting of four medical professors, eight assistant medical directors and 16 specialists and interns is at your disposal regarding consultations, treatment planning and medical care in the different specialties. The clinic consists of one patient ward, which serves approximately 3,000 patients a year, a day clinic and a clinic for outpatient surgical interventions. The polyclinic sees approximately 12,000 patients every year, mostly referred to us by specialists. As of 2019, our surgical team makes use of the most advanced operating center in all of Europe, the hospital’s newly built “Haus 32”. In our highly-specialized surgical therapy, we put special focus on the treatment of more than 400 patients diagnosed with Head-Neck-Tumors per year, the navigation and monitor-assisted surgery of acoustic neuromas and skull-base tumors, ear and orbita microsurgery, endoscopic-assisted surgery of the nose and the paranasal cavity, plastic reconstructive surgery, and the implantation of highly advanced cochlea-implants and implantable hearing aids. More than 120 patients each year receive one of these implants at the clinic, which allow treatment of severe and even complete hearing loss. In the months following surgery, these patients are aided in rehabilitation and re-learning of speech by the interdisciplinary team at the affiliated Saxonian Cochlear Implant Center. The ORL-HNS clinic with the affiliated Ear Research Center Dresden is one of the leading clinics worldwide for the development and application of new methods and technologies in microsurgery and implantable hearing systems. Experts from all over the world come here every year for one of three international surgery master classes taught by our specialists. The clinic has further acquired international renown for the outstanding expertise of the departments of olfactory and taste impairments, the department of phoniatrics and pediatric audiology, as well as the department of allergology/rhinology and acupuncture.
