Subproject 6
Recent evidence suggests a role of the gene products, which are defective in patients with Aicardi-Goutières Syndrom (AGS), in the control of mobile genetic elements within the human genome. An impaired control of these endogenous genetic elements, which are related to exogenous retroviruses like human immunodeficiency virus, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmunity via stimulation of the innate immune system. Using genetic, molecular, cell biologic and biophysical methods we will investigate the potential role of the AGS gene products in defense mechanisms against exogenous viruses.
