Neurology-Psychiatry

Neurological diseases in childhood and adulthood are often accompanied by (progressive) physical and mental disability. These diseases occur at all stages of life and are characterised by a significant tendency towards progression, chronification and/or recurrent episodes of disease with loss of neural function and mental health.

Neurodegeneration may be the cause or consequence of the underlying pathophysiology. Many neurodegenerative diseases have genetic causes. In addition to physical symptoms, such patients often suffer from neuropsychological and psychiatric comorbidities, which often cause the greater demands on the care of these patients. Genetic causes are not only relevant for diseases discovered in childhood, but foreseeably also for adults with neurodegenerative diseases. The identification of genetic causes can help to implement appropriate support measures and preventive examinations as well as interdisciplinary medical care and to provide assistance in family planning. In addition, causal therapies are available for more and more genetic diseases, which can be offered, for example, within the framework of studies.

Other focal points of the neuroscience clinics and institutes of the USE are myopathies and mitochondrial diseases. Both disease groups can be caused by rare inflammatory, autoimmune or genetic causes. The clinical symptoms of these patients often affect several organ systems (in addition to neurology, cardiology, pulmonology, endocrinology, orthopaedics), so that interdisciplinary care of the patients is of great importance. In the field of mitochondrial diseases, the ZSE (Mitochondrial Laboratory of the Neuro-Cluster) offers a wide range of molecular genetic mitochondrial diagnostics with DAkkS accreditation, which is also available to external senders nationwide.

The Clinic and Polyclinic for Neurology, KClinic and Polyclinic for Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Department of Neuropaediatrics, the Institute for Clinical Genetics nstitut für Klinische Genetik and the Clinic and Polyclinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy are integrated into the cluster.
